Mix It Up!

Mix It Up!

Abstract scientific concepts are usually hard for students to understand – especially in third grade. So what can a teacher do to help make the concept of what a “mixture” means, from a scientific point of view, more concrete for students? Add a hands-on integrated iPad project to the mix!

Mrs. Kilgo, 3rd grade teacher at Speegleville Elementary, developed a lesson which included several different activities to help reach this goal. Activities included students:

  • reading about and discussing what “mixture” means in science.
  • participating in an experiment where students created their own mixtures from cereals, pretzels, M&Ms, etc.
  • “becoming” the mixture by using the ChatterPix Kids App and recording a “monologue” explaining “who” they were.

“Student comprehension was higher,” said Mrs. Kilgo, “and we all had so much fun!”
